A Nanny State needs a continuous stream of socialist ideas to fuel it

July 2019

On the 25th of July 2019 we learnt of the latest socialist Nanny State initiative: Give students who have been in care a guaranteed university place.

University pledge for care-system students, BBC News, 25th July 2019.

There are several points to this nonsense:

  • The State shouldn't/doesn't need to prop up cared-for children, but it does by way of either care homes, adoption or fostering. The cost to the State of a fostered child is of the order of £75,000+/year by way of payments to the foster parents, free taxis to school, ..., cost of social workers, etc.
  • Yet another example government meddling with education. Universities are semi-autonomous and yet we see them being told what to do with respect to cared-for students.
  • Let's say the entry requirements for a given university are 2Bs and 1 C and that the cared-for student achieves these grades. Then their care couldn't have been that bad, could it? Viewed this way, it reveals the Nanny State-ness of the whole socialist bullshit.
  • Where do you stop, because clearly care up to the age of 16 and 18 is not enough. Now the State wipes their bottoms throughout university by way of paying the 4 year tuition fees (£10,000/year) at a Scottish university. Does the State then guarantee these people a job when they leave? A guaranteed job for the rest of their lives? ...
  • Where are the biological parents in this entire fiasco? Are they working? How much do they contribute to their child's upbringing? How much do they contribute to their child's university education? We all know the answer in a bullshit Nanny State - nothing.
