Contempt of Court - A Way of Shutting You Up

Contempt of Court - A Way of Shutting You Up

November 2019

The case of the murder of Ana Kriégel is noteworthy for it displays the double-standards that exists within the legal system, and specifically contempt of court.

Journalist Niall O'Connor accidentally named one of the boys who murdered Kriégel twice during an interview on the Neil Prendeville show on Cork radio station Red FM on the morning of the 19th of June, the day after the jury's verdicts. O'Connor was charged with contempt of court and fined €2,500 and the radio station fined €10,000. This begs the question: why wasn’t he sentenced to 13 months like Tommy Robinson?

Journalist and radio sation fined for broadcasting name of one of Ana Kriegel’s murderers, Irish Examiner, 1st July 2019.

Now compare this to the case of Tommy Robinson who was similarly arrested, charged, sentenced and imprisoned for contempt of court all in the same day!! Robinson was sentenced to 13 months in prison whereas O'Connor was fined. I would like a judge or member of UKGov to explain that one.
